Some information about the original and the model:

In the course of a far-reaching electrification, the Bavarian group administration of the DRG ordered new electric locomotives in the 1920s for heavy express train service that were labelled as ES 1. At first, the locomotives were meant to be fitted with tiller steering but it was soon decided to change the concept to a Buchli drive, that was newly developed for the SBB by BBC. The first series of the 120 km/h fast locomotive was put into service in 1926, two more series in 1927 and 1932/33. Despite their complex maintenance, the locomotives with their one-sided drive were very reliable and gained high popularity among the locomotive staffs. After WW II, 19 of the locomotives got to the Deuitsche Bundesbahn. The last of the E16 locomotives were taken out of service in 1980, then labelled as series 116.

Locomotive 116 008-4 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, railway headquarters Munich, railway depot Freilassing, revision date 24.3.72. The PIKO series 116 captivates with its detailed mould making with many rivets on the frame, a small but strong special motor, a modern Next18 interface, LED lighting with high luminosity and digitally switchable rear light.

Why you shouldn’t miss out on the model:

The PIKO series 116 is equipped with realistic recreations of the lamps, the front handrails according to DB standards, delicate isolators and pantographs, separately attached pipes, snowploughs, Indusi magnets and sharply engraved covers of the Buchli drive, plunger buffers and sand boxes of the DB as well as delicate rooftop walkways. The model has a heavy zinc die-cast frame which ensures a high traction power for realistically long model trains.

For the first time, PIKO offers a high-quality N scale model of this historical series with many attractive optical features, excellent driving characteristics and high technical standards like digitally switchable illumination of the driver’s cabin and rear lights.

The detailed model of the series 116 shows the high quality standards of new PIKO constructions and promises prolonged fun due to its fine and operational realisation! The realistic recreation of the striking Buchli drive will make the locomotive a highlight in every model train collection and an eye-catcher on every layout.
