Further information about the prototype and the model

In the 1970s, the DB needed a four-axle universal locomotive that could be used both in front of fast freight trains and in IC traffic. Between 1979 and 1980, the first five Class 120 locomotives were delivered to DB in red/beige TEE paintwork with modern three-phase AC drive technology. The locomotive 120 005-4, which was approved for 200 km/h, had a deviating bend in the front as well as a roof and buffer cladding. On August 13th 1980, the locomotive 120 002 set a new world record of 231 km/h for three-phase AC vehicles. After four years of testing, 60 series-produced locomotives followed, which, thanks to their modern optical design, had a form-ative influence on the appearance of the German Bundesbahn in the 1980s. The main field of application of the locomotives to this day is service in front of heavy IC trains

The PIKO model of the attractive electric locomotive 120 005 convinces with an exact implementation of the striking locomotive shape with the lowered front bend edge and aprons under the buffer beam, attached hand-rails, sharply engraved bogie panels and filigree metal pantographs. The factory built-in driver's cab lighting and the direction-dependent rear lights can be digitally switched with a PluX22 decoder. The five-pole motor with two flywheels ensures excellent driving characteristics. The heavy model with two traction tires for high tractive forces has a digital interface PluX22 according to NEM 658 and is prepared for an easy upgrade with sound and a large loudspeaker. Closed aprons and brake hoses for retrofitting are included.

More reasons why the PIKO model should be on your layout:

The PIKO locomotives of the Class 120 DB convince with fine insulators and roof cables, attached front handles and door handrails, separate UIC sockets and windscreen wipers. The deeply engraved bogies have lovingly designed brake shoes, wheel bearing caps, lubricating pots and cables. Many other separate details such as sandboxes, roof ventilators and treads make the locomotive a feast for the eyes.

With the attractive PIKO IC 79 cars #59660 et seq. you can build realistic train sets!

With the pre-series 120, PIKO fulfils the wish of many H0 railroaders for a modern, finely detailed and above all operational model of this important locomotive family. The PIKO locomotive can also be used in smaller radii without having to rework the bogies or find broken parts on the model railroad layout after every turn. Together with the passenger cars #59660 et seq., the vehicles allow a realistic replica of the era IV InterCitys of the Bundesbahn with PIKO models.
