Further information about the prototype and model:

In order to cover the demand for locomotives at the Deutsche Reichsbahn, it was decided to develop new steam locomotives in addition to the conversion and reconstruction of old vehicles, the so-called "Reko" vehicles. One of these new DR locomotives was the class 83.10. A total of 27 locomotives were built at the Babelsberg locomotive works. The main area of use for the newly constructed locomotives was to be the branch lines. Despite known deficiencies in the prototype, the locomotive was put into service. Nevertheless, the BR 83.10 excelled in its golden years, especially on the Ore Mountains lines, with a top speed of 60 km/h. With large stocks on board, the locomotives spent considerably more time on the line than in the responsible depot. The end of the steam engines became apparent with the switch to diesel operation. By 1974, all the locomotives had been scrapped, so that no original has survived as a museum locomotive.

Our prototype: Lokomotive 83 1027-8 of the Deutschen Reichsbahn, Rbd Magdeburg, Bw Haldensleben Rev.-Date 10.2.70.

To create a model of a locomotive that no longer exists in the original presented the PIKO engineers with additional challenges. In order to achieve maximum accuracy to the original, the designers used not only construc-tion drawings, but also contemporary witnesses and a great deal of their own research. The proportions of the locomotive have been excellently captured for the scale ratio of 1:120. The detailing of the BR 83.10 from PIKO is, as always, generous. Separate factory applied parts of the locomotive include: Bell, whistle, water box lids, alternator, steps to the buffer beam, ladders, hand poles, heating pipes and sand pipes. Brake hoses to complete the buffer beam are enclosed separately. When driving, the metal rod drive comes into action. Driven by a motor with flywheel mass, the locomotive, supported by two traction tyres, starts moving slowly and carefully, without any disturbing vibrations. By retrofitting a PIKO SmartDecoder XP 5.1 Next18, the starting delay can be set individually as desired. The sound version is already equipped ex works with a PIKO SmartDecoder XP 5.1 Sound with TrainSound®onboard.

PIKO is the first model railway manufacturer to produce this special machine in large series. LEDs have been used for the various lighting and light functions, which also shine brightly in analogue operation even at low voltage. After the H0 model, the friends of the middle scale now also have their chance. The new addition to steam traction is eagerly awaited by the many TT fans of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

As the newcomer among the old, the class 83.10 still has a place in every collection and in every fleet. The locomotive, which no longer exists in the original, exerts a very special fascination on model railway enthusiasts as a model. Once again, PIKO has fulfilled a wish expressed by many model railroaders and has once again shown that it is also taking on special types of locomotives. Further, suitable rolling stock is already represented in PIKO's TT range. For example, the previously released Reko cars in TT scale are an optimal complement to the class 83.10.
