Some information about the prototype and model:

At the end of the 1980s, PKP needed a new locomotive series for the fast passenger services between Warszawa and Kraków that could cope with the demands of transport at 160 km/h in the long term. The number of EP05 series locomotives converted from the EU05 from 1973 onwards was limited and they were getting on in years. Pafawag therefore designed the new locomotive type 104E in Wrocław, the prototype of which was presented in 1986 as EP09 001. A second pre-series locomotive followed a year later. The machines fully met the expectations placed in them, with the result that PKP acquired a further 45 machines by 1997. The last ten already had an air-conditioned driver's cab. The EP09 was used throughout the country and almost completely replaced the EP05. Its use also had an impact on the slower EP08, which was only used on lines with lower speeds. Due to a lack of secure funding for multi-system locomotives from the PKP, the EP09 was not replaced from the high-quality passenger train service Kraków - Warszawa and Warszawa - Frankfurt (Oder) until 2008 and thus became the defining face of this period. It was only with the introduction of the EU44 that the EP09 increasingly disappeared from the high-quality services. Nevertheless, all of the locomotives are still in the PKP fleet today.

With the realisation of the EP09 as a large series model, PIKO is fulfilling a heartfelt wish of many model railway enthusiasts - and not only in Poland. The realisation of the characteristically angular prototype has succeeded in the usual high model quality. The smooth edges of the striking locomotive design are complemented by fine details: The PIKO Expert model is characterised by the finest engravings, plastic fan replicas as well as a highly detailed roof design and small-scale bogies. Thanks to its high dead weight and a perfectly coordinated drive concept with a central motor and flywheels, the locomotive has high tractive power and finely controllable driving characteristics, which can be further optimised by simply installing a digital decoder. A modern PluX22 interface is available on the tidy circuit board for this purpose. Digitally equipped machines from the factory have an authentic locomotive sound and numerous switchable lighting functions. The model is rounded off by the clean, prototypical paintwork and the elaborate printing.

With the EP09, PIKO presents the most important Polish express locomotive of the present day, which not only attracts attention on the model railway layout, but also in the display case.
