Some information about the prototype:
With the Class D.445, the Italian State Railways (Ferrovie dello Stato) set new standards in diesel-powered passenger service from the mid-1970s onwards. At the time of their commissioning, the diesel-electric locomotives were considered the most powerful of their kind in Italy and shaped the appearance of non-electrified mainline routes on the mainland as well as on Sardinia for decades. Between 1974 and 1988, a total of 150 locomotives were built in three production batches by FIAT.
The first 35 locomotives were characterized by curved front windscreens and the absence of push-pull control, limiting their use mainly to conventionally operated passenger trains. From 1980 onwards, the originally curved windscreens were replaced by flat ones. With the second production batch, push-pull capability was introduced, significantly increasing operational flexibility. The third and largest batch finally brought a distinctive visual change: in addition to the three front headlights, these locomotives were equipped with additional rear lights, clearly setting them apart from their predecessors.
With the increasing use of modern multiple units, the importance of the class gradually declined. Nevertheless, around 60 locomotives are still in service today. Their remaining duties are concentrated on regional services in Tuscany as well as selected operations in Calabria, where they occasionally also haul InterCity or freight trains. This makes the D.445 an impressive example of Italian locomotive engineering with remarkable longevity.
