Some information about the prototype:

The legendary M44 class diesel shunting locomotives stand for robust performance, high reliability and versatile use in shunting and light freight service. Since the late 1950s, these diesel locomotives have shaped operations not only in Hungary but, in exported variants, also found their way to the ČSD, to Poland and to the countries of the former Soviet Union. Equipped with the powerful Ganz-Jendrassik XVI 170/240 V16 diesel engine and a top speed of 80 km/h, the M44 combines efficiency, durability and flexibility. Its distinctive design with the cab at one end of the vehicle and practical walkways for shunting staff makes it an unmistakable classic of European railway history. In addition to the locomotives of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV, numerous examples were delivered to industrial and works railways, where the M44 quickly became a familiar and valued workhorse thanks to its strong tractive power and robust construction. The simple basic design facilitated maintenance and servicing both for state railways and industrial operators and contributed significantly to the long service life of the M44.
