Some information about the prototype:

When powerful diesel locomotives for shunting service were lacking in Poland in the mid-1950s, Polskie Koleje Państwowe opted for proven Hungarian technology: the M44 class locomotives. At a time when Polish diesel traction was still being developed and many depots were operating outdated steam shunting locomotives, the robust M44 offered a practical and comparatively quickly available solution.

Following successful trials in 1957, conducted in the marshalling yards Warszawa Odolany and Poznań Franowo, ten locomotives were purchased in 1958 and entered service as PKP SM40-01 to 10. These first M44 units for Poland largely corresponded to the Hungarian base version but were already equipped with Polish safety and radio systems.

With improved power control, optimized electrical control systems and practical shunting handrails, the further developed series entered production from 1961 as the PKP SM41

Their area of operation ranged from major railway hubs such as Warszawa, Gdańsk and Wrocław to regional freight yards and industrial plants. The locomotive was considered reliable, powerful and easy to maintain – qualities that made it popular in railway depots as well as on industrial railways in steelworks and chemical plants.

Some examples have been preserved as contemporary witnesses – representing an era in which Polish stations and shunting yards were characterized by the distinctive sound and striking silhouette of these machines.
