Some information about the prototype:

The Vectron Dual Mode is a modern dual-power locomotive that can operate both electrically and with diesel power – flexible, powerful and environmentally conscious. Developed by Siemens Mobility on the basis of the proven Vectron DE, it is a locomotive that seamlessly masters the transition between electrified and non-electrified routes.

Since its introduction in 2019, the class has established itself as a forward-looking concept. The Class 248 (Vectron Dual Mode) and the lighter Class 249 (Vectron Dual Mode Light) form two variants that are optimally tailored to different operational requirements. The locomotives were equipped with a pantograph, main circuit breaker and surge arrester on the roof in order to draw power directly from the overhead line. Thanks to the more compact fuel tank, space was created beneath the locomotive frame for the main transformer. With its versatility, efficiency and future-proof design, the Vectron Dual Mode represents the next step in modern rail transport – a strong link between tradition and progress.
