Some information about the prototype:

At the end of the 1930s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn developed the Class E 19, one of the fastest and most elegant electric locomotives of its time. Designed for operation on the fully electrified route between Berlin, Halle (Saale) and Munich, it was intended to reach a top speed of 180 km/h, with reserves for speeds exceeding 200 km/h. Even on the steep gradients of the Frankenwald line, the locomotive was expected to maintain 60 km/h.

In 1937, AEG built two prototypes (E 19 01 and 02), which were based on the proven E 18 and adopted its successful quill drive as well as the rigid-frame 1’Do1’ wheel arrangement.

After the Second World War, the Deutsche Bundesbahn took over the locomotives. Initially based at the Nürnberg depot, they hauled express trains over the Frankenwald route and between Nuremberg and Regensburg. From 1968 onward, the locomotives received the new designation Class 119. The active service life of the class ended in 1978 with the retirement of the last locomotive, E 19 002.
